CEO Healthcare Roundtable - Arizona Biltmore, Phoenix

​I’m pleased to share a brief summary of our CEO Healthcare Roundtable conducted on November 7 – 9, 2018 at the Arizona Biltmore in Phoenix, AZ. Once again, our thinking was challenged as we heard several excellent presentations related to the theme of “Strategies for Managing Disruption.” We also again enjoyed numerous opportunities to share and learn from one another both during Roundtable discussions as well as during informal networking conversations.
DAY 1 (AFTERNOON) - We opened the Fall 2018 Roundtable with our traditional Wednesday afternoon “big picture” presentation by a national healthcare expert. Neal Hogan, who is widely recognized as a healthcare industry thought leader and strategist, challenged our thinking on industry disruption by raising numerous questions; sharing data and trends; and ultimately framing comments around population health. He even challenged the idea of whether health systems should be focusing on population health by asking the attendees to define the fundamental role and purpose of hospitals. His presentation generated some lively discussion when he posed the question “What exactly is Population Health” and “Is Population Health Dead?”.
 
DAY 2 (MORNING & AFTERNOON) - Thursday morning, Rob Cottrell of the Cleveland Research Company shared a timely and interesting Wall Street perspective on all the disruptions occurring as a result of the consolidations and acquisitions occurring among the large national health plans and the PBM industry. He pointed out that by the end of this year, due to recent mergers and acquisitions, every major PBM will be owned by, or own, a major health insurer. Rob also offered his thoughts and engaged the Roundtable attendees in a discussion around ways that hospitals and health systems can position themselves to engage and work with the mega-healthcare organizations by suggesting that the relationship be framed around the concept of “frenemies”.
 
Our next presentation was by Dr. Tarek Elsawy, CEO of Reliant Medical Group in Boston. Reliant Medical, originally established in 1929 as the Fallon Clinic, was created in 2011 as the physician organization expanded through mergers with other independent physician groups to become the largest independent physician group in Central Massachusetts. Dr. Elsawy then led the sale of Reliant Medical Group to OptumCare, a division of Optum, earlier this year. Dr. Elsawy shared the story and rationale for the sale to Optum and led a lively discussion about the disruptions occurring between physicians and health systems as physicians consolidate and move to more risk and capitated contracts with payers. Dr. Elsawy also shared several thoughts and suggestions for hospitals to work collaboratively with independent physician groups like Reliant.
 
Following lunch, CEO Healthcare Roundtable member Paul Hiltz, CEO of Mercy Medical Center, pulled together the earlier three presentations by focusing on the importance of performance improvement in a world of external and internal disruptions and challenges. Paul shared the story of the significant cultural and financial turnaround results achieved at Mercy Medical Center through successful implementation of a focused performance improvement plan.
 
DAY 3 (MORNING) - Finally, our Friday morning innovation presentation was made by Care Logistics, a performance improvement organization that has assisted a few of the CEO Healthcare Roundtable members develop and implement innovative, highly effective, performance improvement programs utilizing the concept of a centralized hub to expand operational best practices uniformly across the organization. The Care Logistics team also introduced the role that artificial intelligence (AI) is beginning to assume in healthcare operations and performance improvement.
